She worked for the American Diabetes Association for several years raising funds to improve the lives of those living with diabetes through advocacy, education and research. She then worked for over a decade as a children's minister at her church where she was passionate about walking alongside children and their families through life's challenges and joys. Her time in this role led her to explore a career in counseling. She is currently pursuing her Master's in Counseling at UAB with a concentration in marriage, couples and family. She plans to graduate in December 2023 and hopes to work with children and adolescents. She is excited to join the team at CR Counseling in her role as Intern.

Desarea “Des” Waller is a native Birmingham woman who has over 5 years experience with finding natural remedies and tools for coping with anxiety while enduring life’s transitions. She began her studies at Art Institute of Atlanta, where she majored in fashion merchandising, but shortly after, life humbled her back home where she moved into an entirely new person, a mom, and there were so many stressors that came along with that.

While raising her son, Des lost sight of her passion and decided to find a career more suitable to provide stability for her family, so she picked back up her studies and pursued a degree in computer science at Virginia College in Birmingham, AL. She felt as if she had all the materialistic necessities she saw fit, but there was still something missing, so she started going to therapy, which has a negative stigma within her community, but this place provided so much comfort and gave her a vision to a clearer path; Des was no longer “surviving,” but she began to LIVE within her own rights and happiness.

It is said when you heal yourself, you heal seven generations ahead of you and seven generations back, and through healing herself, Des became a better person for her family. She is extremely grateful for the journey which she awoke from just existing, and is happy to be a part of the team.

Social Media Intern

Destyni Cravens is a first-generation college student and is a senior at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) double majoring in Psychology and Sociology. She is also obtaining her Master's in Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in Health Behavior at UAB. Destyni's experience living with her mother who had biploar disorder is what initially encouraged her to learn more about mental health through her coursework. Destyni serves as CR Counseling's Social Media Intern!

Destyni is involved in several student-led mental health promotion organizations on UAB's campus. She is the Communications Coordinating lead for the UAB Mental Health Ambassadors (MHA), an outreach chair for Active Minds at UAB, and serves on the UAB Student Counseling Services (SCS) Student Advisory Board. Destyni has recently started her own student organization at UAB called It's On Us at UAB, which is a peer-to-peer sexual assault prevention education model that empowers students to teach one another at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

In addition to her involvement with these organizations, she conducts research at UAB's Child Development Lab and serves as a teaching assistant for both undergraduate and graduate courses at UAB. Her research interests include topics such as parentification, role reversal, family roles, and art therapy. Destyni aims to graduate in the Spring of 2022 from UAB and then obtain her PhD in Child Clinical Psychology in hopes of becoming a Certified Clinical Child Psychologist.
