Antwan “Twan” Dixon is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Alabama and Georgia. He also an adjunct professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) where he teaches the Diagnosis and Treatment of Psychological Disorders course to graduate students pursuing their master's degree in counseling. He is a three time graduate of Jacksonville State University where he received his Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Psychology, Master of Science (MS) degree in Counselor Education, and an Educational Specialist (EdS) degree in Clinical Mental Health Counselor.

Twan utilizes a person-centered and integrative approach to therapy. The emphasis of person-centered therapy is to have clients utilize resources on becoming aware of self and helping to resolve barriers to personal growth. As a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Twan prides his work with various populations on the instillation of hope, personal growth/development, life skills, and healthy coping techniques. He believes in therapy clients possess the ability and strengths to achieve concrete tangible goals in their lives. Twan states, “As you receive counseling services you will be provided a comfortable, non-judgmental environment where, we can work together to assist with identifying problems and developing goals; as well as healthy interventions to aid in having a successful life.” Some of the areas that Twan focuses on in counseling are: mental health; substance abuse; adjustment issues; life stressors; gay/lesbian issues; anger; behavioral health; anxiety; depression; impulse control; self-esteem and confidence.

When I am not counseling I enjoy time to myself...what does that look like? Well, for me it's exercising in the gym at least 4 days a week, cooking, and my guilty pleasure (watching reality TV and shows of the likes).

Let's take this journey together!!! I look forward to working with you.

Desarea “Des” Waller is a native Birmingham woman who has over 5 years experience with finding natural remedies and tools for coping with anxiety while enduring life’s transitions. She began her studies at Art Institute of Atlanta, where she majored in fashion merchandising, but shortly after, life humbled her back home where she moved into an entirely new person, a mom, and there were so many stressors that came along with that.

While raising her son, Des lost sight of her passion and decided to find a career more suitable to provide stability for her family, so she picked back up her studies and pursued a degree in computer science at Virginia College in Birmingham, AL. She felt as if she had all the materialistic necessities she saw fit, but there was still something missing, so she started going to therapy, which has a negative stigma within her community, but this place provided so much comfort and gave her a vision to a clearer path; Des was no longer “surviving,” but she began to LIVE within her own rights and happiness.

It is said when you heal yourself, you heal seven generations ahead of you and seven generations back, and through healing herself, Des became a better person for her family. She is extremely grateful for the journey which she awoke from just existing, and is happy to be a part of the team.

Destyni Cravens is a first-generation college student and is a senior at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) double majoring in Psychology and Sociology. She is also obtaining her Master's in Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in Health Behavior at UAB. Destyni's experience living with her mother who had biploar disorder is what initially encouraged her to learn more about mental health through her coursework. Destyni serves as CR Counseling's Social Media Intern!

Destyni is involved in several student-led mental health promotion organizations on UAB's campus. She is the Communications Coordinating lead for the UAB Mental Health Ambassadors (MHA), an outreach chair for Active Minds at UAB, and serves on the UAB Student Counseling Services (SCS) Student Advisory Board. Destyni has recently started her own student organization at UAB called It's On Us at UAB, which is a peer-to-peer sexual assault prevention education model that empowers students to teach one another at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

In addition to her involvement with these organizations, she conducts research at UAB's Child Development Lab and serves as a teaching assistant for both undergraduate and graduate courses at UAB. Her research interests include topics such as parentification, role reversal, family roles, and art therapy. Destyni aims to graduate in the Spring of 2022 from UAB and then obtain her PhD in Child Clinical Psychology in hopes of becoming a Certified Clinical Child Psychologist.
