What was life like before the birth of technology, the internet, and COVID-19? How were people able to still interact without having a cellphone, luxury movie theaters, fancy bowling alleys, etc.? Families made due with tangible items around the house or yard to create memories (i.e. Tic-Tac-Toe, Hangman, or Pick -up Sticks).
Presently, we have found ourselves experiencing a time where we are having to revert to finding ways to create memories and stay active with our families while not leaving the comfort of our homes. What is there to do when the family room is our "getaway"? Finding activities to stimulate your mind is an easy way to stay active, engaged, and focused with your family. I don't know about you, but I have been getting tight and stiff from sitting in the house for almost four weeks!! A great thing to do is to get up and run around the yard with your child(ren) while revisiting your childhood cardio style backyard games.
If you grew up in earlier years, you may remember playing stick ball, street ball, freeze tag, London Bridges, etc.. Growing up in the 90's, I rode bikes, played Hide and Seek, Mother May I, Red Light-Green Light, and much more. Click the link and choose an activity below to get your body moving: Working, sitting, and teaching from home can become dreary and repetitive. What is there to do when everything is primarily closed? It's easy to focus on the negatives, yet, it takes more work to focus on the positives. This is a great time to teach your child some of your childhood games.
Do you remember gathering with your siblings and/or cousins to teach each other new hand clapping games you learned at school? Or did you all make up your own hand clapping games compiled with pace, sounds, lyrics, and moves such as Ms. Mary Mack, Hot Hands, Down by the River, etc.? Get your child(ren) together tonight, sit in a circle, and play some games that engages your hand and eye coordination. Some examples and lyrics (from my childhood) are as followed:
